What the Bible Says About Jesus In this Bible study, Pastor Ron McDonald explores in detail “What the Bible really says about Jesus. You’ll receive revelations and a new understanding of just who our Lord and Savior really is in context of God’s Word.
There is a history of conflict between God and Satan, and “enmity”
(Hostility) between those who are their servants. Satan was content for you to be successful, to go to church, do good deeds, and think you had found your own path to heaven and it’s rewards. Knowing that these things would not bring the rewards you envisioned, and that at death you would realize that you were his property, to do with as he pleased.
But now that you been set free from his power and have committed your life to Christ, he wants to destroy you. He wants to stop you from realizing the great plans that God has in store for you.
1. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Jn 10:10
2. “ Be sober, be vigilant; because ____ _________ the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” I Pet 5:8-10
Spiritual Warfare teaching can be good and bad. Good, in that we become aware that we will be attacked. Thus we get to know our enemy, his devices and his weapons. We also must know the weapons available to us to defeat the enemy and the defensive tactics which are available to us.
Bad, in that many people get so “Devil” focused that, it is all they think about. They see him everywhere and behind every adversity. Satan uses this as a means to magnify his power and abilities far beyond what he is truly capable of.
WHO IS SATAN ?
As we have already seen, the Bible refers to him as the “thief” and the “adversary” but he has many other names and titles.
The name comes from the Hebrew word satan, for “adversary”, or “hater” (Gr: satanas) but when the common noun is turned into a proper noun it becomes “Satan” (with capital “S”), the Chief Adversary, the Arch-Enemy and the Deceiver of the whole world.
He is first seen disguised as a serpent who tempted Eve and caused the first sin on this earth. (Gen 3:1-15)
3. “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Gen 3:1.
4. “Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not ______ ___. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Gen 3:4-5
We begin see his character in these preceding texts. First, He brings into question the honesty of God. Second, He brings into question God’s love. Third, He promises something he cannot give.
The following texts continue to reveal more of Satan’s nature.
5. “… He was a ________ from the beginning, and does not stand
in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” Jn 8:44b
6. In I Chron 21:1 we read: “Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.”
7. He next appears in Job (Job 1:6-12; 2:1-7). “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and ____ _______ back and forth on it.” Job 1:6-7.
8. “Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears (Awe or Reverence) God and shuns evil?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now, stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely _____ ___ to Your face! And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand of his person…” Job 1:9-12
9. “while he was still speaking, another also came and said, “ your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead…”. Job 1:18-19
10. “… Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.” Job 2:6-7
11. “Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks . Shall we indeed accept ____ from God, and shall we not accept _________? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:9-10
New Testament Revelation of Satan.
When the New Testament books were written there was an established doctrine of Satan. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
clearly accept and teach of a personal Satan and his agents
(Fallen angels or demons).
12. “And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.” So He (Jesus) called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan?” Mk 4:22-23
(Beelzebub based on Baal-zebub) (Heb: lord of the flies)(II Ki 1:2)
(Matt 10:25 prince of demons) Also (lord of the dung)
13. “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit in the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Matt 4:1
14. “…Depart from Me, you cursed, into the ___________ ____ prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matt 25:41
15. Satan possessed Judas. “Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.” Lk 22:3
16. John saw Satan as the Prince of this world. “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” Jn 12:31
16. “I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.” Jn 15:30
17. Paul teaches that Satan is the god of this age and “commander of the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”. “And you He made alive, who were dead in the __________ ___ ____, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind…“ Eph 2:1-3.
18. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against _________ _____ of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Eph 6:12
Other New Testament books describe Satan’s activities. Second Peter 2:4 speaks of the “angels that sinned” and Jude 6 of the ”angels which kept not their first estate.”
19. “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, ___ ___ _______ (Gr: “diabolos”) of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.” Rev 12:10
SATAN’S PAST
20. Created: “Praise Him all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts…” “Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they ____ _______.” Ps 148:2&5
God did not create the Devil as we know him today. Everything God made was declared “Good” (Gen 1:31).
21. “…Thus says the Lord God: “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of god; Every precious stone was your covering;” “…The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you;” “…You were perfect in all in your ways from the day you were created, ____ ________ was found in you.”
Ezek 28: 12b-14a; 15. (See Verses 12-19)
22. Isaiah 14:12-17 gives us his name before he fell. He was called “Lucifer”, which means “the morning star.” It is literally “light-bearer.” “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart; I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the ____________ on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.” Is 14: 12-14
23. Paul, writing to Timothy, regarding leadership in the church says “not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.” I Tim 3:6
24. Jesus said “And He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’” Lk 10:18
25. “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that _______ __ ___, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Rev 12:7-9
Satan and his allies are all created and NOT equal with God. Satan
can tempt but not force. The main concern of the Bible is not with the devil but with God and the gospel of His grace. Satan has been overcome by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ!
